Over the weekend, Tom and I volunteered at our local shelter. We go in about once a month and take photos of the cats and kittens. This weekend was especially hard for me, as we encountered a number of owner-surrendered senior cats. I found myself particularly attached to and upset about a 9-year-old female Persian (the shelter named her Miss Kitty) who was emaciated and completely filthy – fleas, matted fur, etc. I can’t understand that kind of neglect and abandonment, and it broke my heart.
This piece is in honor of Miss Kitty. I hope that the love and affection we were able to give her while we were there made her time at the shelter even a little less lonely and more bearable.
